LOCATION: University Book Store.

Artist’s statement:
“They took our Black bodies from us. Chained us. Tried to break us. Punished. Manipulated. Starved us. Tried to bury us & make ashes of our culture. Make ashes of our language. Make ashes of our voices. Make ashes of our story.”

According to the Greek historian, Herodotus, the myth of the Phoenix comes from Egyptian tradition. The phoenix was a bird associated with the cult of the sun and related to the flooding of the Nile. The Phoenix would rise from the ashes of their predecessor. It was a symbol for creation and life.
